Job Description
As
Chief Medical Officer for the Commonwealth Government, you wil provide advice and support to
Ministers and the Department across the full range of health issues confronting the Australian
community. As a member of the Department’s Executive team, you will carry responsibility for the
Office of Health Protection which has a focus on biosecurity, communicable disease surveillance,
preparedness for national and regional health emergencies and the national immunisation program.
In addition, you wil contribute to the Department’s work on research, quality of care, the burden of
chronic disease and an outcomes focussed health system. You wil also be responsible for leading the
professional development of the Department’s medical officers, maintaining high quality
relationships between the Department, the medical profession, medical colleges, universities and
other key stakeholders, and representing the Health portfolio in a range of national and international
forums.
ACT 1982 (CTH)
To succeed in this high profile and demanding role, you will need to be an acknowledged leader in
your chosen medical speciality with substantial clinical experience. You will have a comprehensive
understanding of Australia’s health care system, including Commonwealth and State / Territory
interactions, and a good appreciation of future national and international health care chal enges.
Your demonstrated capacity to engage senior stakeholders and to broker decisions through
collaboration and consensus will be complemented by political sensitivity and high level policy
advisory and leadership skills.
This is a critical senior appointment and the remuneration package and other benefits will be
structured to attract an exceptional appointee.
