List of Government gov.au Domains

Ashley Hull made this Freedom of Information request to Department of Finance

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Department of Finance,

I am seeking the following document under the Commonwealth Freedom of Information Act 1982.

1) The list of gov.au domain names as contained in the
"compendium of the Australian Government web estate" referred to in
the Australian Government Domain Name Policy administered by AGIMO
http://www.domainname.gov.au/domain-poli...

There are a number of webpages that act as directories, but none of these are complete or up to date (no dates of reference are even available.)

Yours faithfully,

Ashley Hull

I've made this request before https://www.righttoknow.org.au/request/l..., the link to the compendium on this page http://www.domainname.gov.au/domain-poli... goes to australia.gov.au http://www.australia.gov.au/directories/...

However, some people later noted that some domain names were still missing from the australia.gov.au list. If you want a complete list, perhaps there is an actual DNS system that will be the authoritative source.

Dear FOI Requests,

This reply does not adequately fulfill the information I require.

As I've stated on my original request, the directory offered is 1) Already known to me 2) incomplete 3) outdated and most importantly 4) Not available in a computer-friendly format.

The directory given to me includes 13 pages of 25 entries per page. Based on this directory, I do not believe only 300 domains in total are registered to the gov.au registrar - I'm going to make a assumption that this list is very much incomplete.

My aim would be to be granted access to a list with a similar level of detail as provided by the US government regarding .gov domains here. https://18f.gsa.gov/2014/12/18/a-complet...

I hope this reply makes my request clear and I'll await your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Ashley Hull

There's a CSV file here with the list:
http://data.gov.au/dataset/a-z-list-of-g...

Looks like there are 838 entries in the document.

Culley, I think that Machine Readable list comes from http://www.australia.gov.au/directories/... which Alex mentioned above appears to be out of date!

Surely, access to the DNS server records for the entire .gov.au domain would be the authoritative source!

Thank you, that list is excellent.

Regardless if the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. I'll be able to use that to reach my original goal.

I wonder if it will get a mention in their reply.

Hi Ashley

Thank you for your email below.

Your original request was:
The list of gov.au domain names as contained in the "compendium of the Australian Government web estate" referred to in the Australian Government Domain Name Policy administered by AGIMO http://www.domainname.gov.au/domain-poli...

The directory that we referred you to - at http://www.australia.gov.au/directories/... contains the complete list of domain names. In your email you contended that there are only 300 domain names listed in the directory. We confirm that there are over 800 domain names listed on the directory.

Your preference for specific format (i.e. machine readable format) was not a part of your original request. Although we are not obliged to provide the information in your specific format, we have converted the directory into a machine readable format in data.gov.au. The directory in machine readable format is available at, https://data.gov.au/dataset/a-z-list-of-....

We trust that the above information adequately addresses the information you are seeking. Unless you advise otherwise, we consider your FOI request to be withdrawn.

Regards,

Chak
