Dear Services Australia,

I am trying to understand the capabilities of the Mygovid app that Services Australia wants to install on my phone.

Does the app give any Australian or International Government or organisation additional capabilities to access my phone?
Can you please itemise these additional capabilities?

Does the app give any Australian or International Government or organisation additional possibilities to access my phone in the future?
Can you please itemise these additional possibilities?

Does the app give any nefarious actor or organisation (hackers, insurance salesmen etc) additional possibilities to access my phone in the future?
Can you please itemise these additional possibilities?

Does the app create additional possibilities for corruption/damage to my phone and its software now or in the future?
Can you please itemise these additional possibilities?

Yours faithfully,

Richard Clark

Dear Mr Clark

Thank you for your email dated 28 March 2021.

In your email you appear to raise some privacy and security concerns with
the myGovID app. Although myGov is run by Services Australia, the myGovID
app (the app) is owned and administered by the Australian Taxation Office
(ATO) who would be best placed to respond to your enquiries in the context
of the capabilities of the app. However, to assist you I have consulted
with the relevant business area within Services Australia (the agency) who
have provided the following information about how the myGovID app can be
used as a sign-in option to access myGov.

The Digital Identity is created using the myGovID app. The Digital
Identity can then be used as a sign in option for myGov account users.
When you connect your Digital Identity to myGov, the agency creates a
Digital Identity profile for you including:

•                     your full name

•                     your date of birth

•                     a unique identifier.

By using myGov, you agree that the agency may collect, use and disclose
your personal information as set out in the privacy notice [1]here.

For more specific information about the capabilities of the myGovID app,
you can contact the ATO by phone on 1300 287 539. You can also find
information about myGovID security at:
[2]https://www.mygovid.gov.au/security.

Whilst you have directed your email to the Freedom of Information team, it
appears you are seeking advice regarding the myGovID app, rather than
documents under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). As such, we
have interpreted your correspondence as an enquiry, rather than a request
under the FOI Act. Please advise if our understanding is not correct.

Your enquiry has now been finalised.

Kind regards

Colette
