Untried lawyers score key positions

We're waiting for Michael to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Federal Court of Australia,

I refer to an article in the Australian titled “Untried lawyers score key positions”, which was published on 8 February 2022.

According to the article, one of the national registrars was “offered a position as National Registrar in September 2018 – over other experienced candidates – months before he completed his College of Law legal training course.” The relevant national registrar was “admitted in February 2019.”

The journalists go on to note that “[the] Australian has obtained applications for the national registrar positions including one lawyer who had been a litigator since 1994 specialising in Federal Court matters. She had previously been a deputy district registrar with the court, lectured at the University of NSW and had published several books about Federal Court litigation.”

The description of the deputy district registrar in the article broadly matches content on the webpage of an academic at the Australian Defence Force Academy: https://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/natalie-cujes

I would like to be sure that the deputy district registrar referred to by the journalists is the academic that I have identified.

Under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cth), I request access to:

i. the vacancy notification published in the Public Service Gazette for the national registrar position referred to in the article; and
ii. the application submitted by the former deputy district registrar referred to in the article for the national registrar position; and
iii. any CV or resume submitted by the former deputy district registrar as part of their application for the national registrar position; and
iv. any reasons prepared by the person or people responsible for selecting the national registrars as to why the former deputy district registrar was not a meritorious candidate for the national registrar position.

Documents can be provided to me by return email.

Yours faithfully,

Michael
