GOVERNANCE / MATERIALITY
The Vice-Chancellor’s Report is a standing item in Council and its subcommittees’ agenda.
BACKGROUND The Vice-Chancellor’s Report provides a summary of activities between committee cycles. This Report
wil include activities from April to May 2025 and is divided across four key themes: finance, culture,
engagement and operations. This wil be supplemented with a verbal report at the meeting.
SUMMARY OF ISSUES
Overview
• Election outcome sees Labor return for another 3-year term. ANU is currently working to
understand the proposed policy setting changes, including the HECS, and how this wil impact
the sector.
• The University continues to work through our relationship with government and changes to
parliament and cabinet. Jason Clare wil remain as Minister for Education, and Julian Hill will
become Assistant Minister for International Education.
• The ANU Annual Report has been submitted to the Minister (mid-April) as per the annual
timetable. It is anticipated that it will be tabled in Parliament in the coming months.
Finance
• ANU saw $140m deficit for 2024. This is lower than the forecasted $200m, which is a testament
to the work of our community to reduce expenditure. The reality is, although this is better than
forecast in Q4, there wil be a deficit of $500m. The journey to financial sustainability continues.
• The Chief Financial Officer released a quarterly update via On Campus.
o This wil be an ongoing quarterly update, published on the ANU Website (‘planning &
governance’) to provide more frequent updates to the community.
Engagement
• The Vice-Chancellor has been at a number of events and launches. The lesser known events,
are the ‘thank you’ events. In the last few weeks, which includes: Senate Estimates, IWD
Building Naming and the Grounds and Gardens team.
• A Memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in April between ANU and Kioloa to
advance First Nations partnerships and heritage.
• The Professional Services Leadership Forum was held on 4 April, and it was focused on the
theme of ‘community’. Leadership was engaged in positive and fruitful discussions around
community building and staying connected.
• The Indigenous Strategy Working Group has been established to replace the former
Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group (RAPWG) which meet early this month with its new
members. A full report of the Working Group’s remit and key initiatives over the past year is
provided in the appendices.
• Throughout 2023 and 2024 the University’s Mental Health Strategy Review Taskforce, led by
Professor Lyndal Strazdins, reviewed and updated the University's Mental Health and
Wel being Strategy. An Executive summary, including a series of actions and risk assessments
is provided in the appendices.
Culture
• Professor Joan Leach has been announced as the DVCA. Joan was Chair of Academic Board
and has held roles including the Director of the Centre for Science Awareness and acting Dean
of the ANU Col ege of Science.
• A new Chief Information Officer has been appointed; Zoran Sugarevski joins ANU from Griffith
University where he most recently served as Chief Digital Officer (CDO) for a number of years
leading enterprise-wide digital transformation programs.
• We have completed searches for the Chief Risk Officer and Chief Marketing and
Communications Officer; preferred candidates have been identified.
• Ongoing senior Recruitment:
o Dean, Col ege of Systems and Society
• New WHS modules are in development, including a Rights, Relationships and Respect Module
for staff.
Operations
• VSS – outcomes have been communicated to staff and deeds continue to be signed.
o At the time of reporting, 325 EOIs have been received. Of those, 175 have been
accepted by the central Recruitment Advisory Committee (RAC); 42 deeds have been
accepted with 29 staff having exited the University through VSS.
• The implementation plan relating to the University’s operating model was released on 16 April.
It was followed by an NTEU dispute around the Renew ANU 2025 Change Principles. This has
since been settled. 25 pieces of feedback were received, including NTEU.
• On Campus continues to be the primary location, or ‘source of truth’ for campus updates and
information.
Other
• In accordance with the
Australian National University (Sir Roland Wilson Foundation) Statute
2019, the Sir Roland Wilson Foundation Annual Report 2024 is published on t
he ANU webpage.
