This assurance approach will provide a high level of confidence in confirming that the national error rate
and error rates in each of the states and territories is low.
Do I need to update any of the “1 in…” figures? We will be over-sampling (at the above rate) in case there are more
ballot paper returned than expected.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I’ve reviewed the previous advice provided by the ABS.
The sampling rates recommended earlier should give at least the required accuracy, but if the number of voting
forms increases, then a larger number of forms will be selected (which I assume will be more expensive). I’ll
recalculate sampling rates based on the updated numbers you’ve provided, and then we can discuss the results.

Hi,
Yes the accuracy requirements are unchanged.
We will know the enrolled population, however we do not know how many of those people will show up to vote and
we do not know how many of those people will actually return their Senate ballot paper.
We normally have about a 5% increase in votes to process each event, the figures below (and that I gave you after
the 2022 event) are based on that with rounding of the numbers.

Hi,
I’d like to double-check a couple of assumptions:
• are the accuracy requirements remaining the same as those for the previous sampling process?
• will you have access to counts for the enrolled population of voters by state?
Thanks,

Hi s22 ,
I’ve looked into your query, and I will recommend that the sampling rates be updated (although I expect the
changes won’t be large).
I’ll send you a follow up email early next week with further advice on the updating – I hope that’s OK. (I’m attending
an external workshop today and tomorrow.)
