A new, digital style manual

The seventh edition of the Australian Government Style Manual is being launched today – a
digital-first edition that will ensure government information is simple, clear, consistent and fit
for the digital age.
First launched in 1966, the Australian Government Style Manual has undergone several
iterations. The last update was 18 years ago, in 2002. It is the Australian Government’s
authoritative source of guidance for writing and editing.
‘Australians expect government information to be simple, clear and accessible,’ DTA CEO
Randall Brugeaud said.
‘The new digital-first edition of the Australian Government Style Manual will help government
departments and agencies communicate clearly and consistently with the Australian
community.’
‘As we continue to make more government services available digitally, it is vital these services
are communicated in a way that is fit for the digital age and is accessible to all Australians.’
The new edition is digital-first in all aspects, enabling ongoing iterations of style guidance,
platform and delivery. It includes new topics and guidance on social media and writing for
search engines, and updated advice for other means of communication.
The Digital Transformation Agency has worked in partnership with Ethos CRS, the Australian
National Dictionary Centre at the Australian National University, and Oxford University Press
Australia and New Zealand to develop the new edition. User research and prototype testing
have informed this development to ensure the digital-first edition meets the needs of its users.
