Good morning
The Public Data Branch at the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet would like to invite you to a half
day workshop to discuss legislative and other major barriers to sharing data across portfolios and
publishing data.
We need to limit participation to 2 or 3 people per agency, so please ensure you send delegates who
have a practical understanding of trying to share and/or publish data, and the barriers faced.
Legislative and major barriers to sharing and publishing data
workshop
Purpose
Various agencies have raised legislative barriers and other barriers to publishing and sharing data in the
past but there has not yet been a comprehensive whole of government review of the barriers. Agencies
are in need of clarification on a number of matters.
This workshop will surface many of the issues, create an opportunity to identify clear inconsistencies in
interpretation, provide a place for agencies to share strategies to overcome some of the challenges they
face today, and provide useful input to any future review into creating a legislative environment that
supports the use of data as recommended by the Public Sector Data Management Report.
Target participants
Ideally, the
participants would be non-legal people who work with government data every day and have
had legislative and other barriers raised by others. You are welcome to bring a legal person for support if
you want but the day will be led by non-legal people who work with data sharing and publishing.
Preparation
Please collate and bring with you on the day what you know to be your legislative, interpretive and other
barriers to publishing and sharing data in your agency. Specific examples and documentation would be
much appreciated please.
Structure
It is a half day workshop. PM&C will facilitate and capture the content of the event. Please see the
agenda attached below for further details.
Outcomes
The PM&C Public Data team will collate all inputs and produce a short report for all agencies based on
the input. It will also form a body of work for any future formal reviews.
