Dear Mr Reid
SUBJECT >>
Request Drain Construction Information – Charters Towers
Road, Hermit Park
Thank you for your enquiry received 5 November 2019 regarding information on the
Hermit Park Drain. This information relates to the concrete lined drain which extends
upstream (east) from Charters Towers Road to Campbell Street, Hermit Park.
Your questions are answered below.
When was it constructed?
The current concrete lined configuration of the drain was constructed around 1976.
Purpose of its construction
The purpose of constructing the concrete lined drain was to formalise the existing
open drain and improve the drainage of this area of Hermit Park. This included the
construction of a number of underground pipe systems, which drain into the
concrete lined section. Formalising the drain also allowed land either side of the
drain to be subdivided.
What existed prior to construction of the Hermit Park Drain?
The area was a natural drainage feature and the low point in the area, which drained
this portion of Hermit Park. See attached figures showing the area in 1938, 1971
before construction, 1981 after construction and now (2016).
What function does the Hermit Park Drain perform?
The function of this drain is to allow drainage of this area of Hermit Park. A number
of underground pipe systems drain into this waterway.
Why was the Hermit Park Drain constructed in its present location?
This area was an existing open drain which was reconfigured by concrete lining and
reshaping the drain. The location of the drain was not necessarily ‘chosen’, it is the
low point in this area.
