FOI 113/20/21 STATEMENT OF REASONS UNDER THE FREEDOM OF 
INFORMATION ACT 
1. 
I refer to the application by Julie Anderson under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 
(FOI Act) for access to: 
“… the following information regarding the number of ADF recruits, by age at enlistment, for the 
financial years 2018‐19 and 2019‐2020. This is to be broken up into the number for each service, 
i.e. Army, Navy and Air Force for: 
MALES: Whose age on enlistment was between 40 and 49. 
Who, on enlistment, were aged 50 or more.  
FEMALES: Whose age on enlistment was between 40 and 49. 
Who, on enlistment, were aged 50 or more.  
I also require by each of the above categories the number who, within 6 months of enlistment 
were: 
: Administratively discharged, and 
: Medically discharged.” 
 
In reply to an email from Defence seeking to clarify the scope, the scope was adjusted to provide 
the information as above for financial year 2018‐19 and until the end of 2019.

I am the authorised officer pursuant to section 23 of the FOI Act to make a decision on 
this FOI request. 
Documents identified

One document was generated in accordance with subsection 17(1)(c)(i) of the FOI Act 
to satisfy the description of the request. This was done on the basis that a written document 
could be produced containing the information in discrete form by the use of a computer 
ordinarily available to Defence for retrieving or collating stored information. 
Decision

I have decided to release the document created under section 17 of the FOI Act in full.

In making my decision, I had regard to: 
a.  the terms of the request; 
b.  the content of the identified documents in issue; 
c.  relevant provisions in the FOI Act;  
d.  the Guidelines published by the Office of the Australian Information 
Commissioner under section 93A of the FOI Act (the Guidelines); and 
e.  advice received from officers within Defence People Group.
