Good afternoon Albin, s 22(1)
The Attorney has considered the above submission and has made decisions on tables 1, 2 and 3.
He has discussed these with Cheryl and she has recorded his decisions on the submission as
attached – please note not all recommended appointments have been approved, and some
quite specific annotations have been made.
Table 4 will follow in the next day or two, but Cheryl asked me to pass these on so that the
department can start actioning them.
Kind regards,

Hi Cheryl

I just wanted to provide a quick update on progress with the AAT appointments. Of the
new
s 47C(1),
s 47E(c)
candidates, we have spoken to
who have all indicated that returning documents in time will
s 47C(1),
s 47E(c)
not be a problem.  However, we are having trouble reaching:
·         Mr Paul Elrich SC  Vic Bar
·
s 47F(1)
         Ms Dawn Fitzgerald
·
s 47F(1)
         Mr Chris Furnell
s 47C(1), s 47E(c)
s 47C(1), s 47E(c), s 47F(1)
·         Mr Dominic Katter, 0407 678 151

and
· s 47C(1), s 47E(c), s 47F(1)

The first four of these we have left voicemail messages for, but have been unable to leave
messages for s 47C(1), s   ors 47C(1), s 47E(c) on the telephone numbers provided, and the number for
s 47C(1), s 47E(c)
47E(c)
appears to be incorrect.  We would be grateful for any alternative contact details you
may have for these candidates. You also indicated that there were potentially two or more
possible additional candidates – we would be grateful for names and contact details for these
candidates as soon as possible if this remains the case.

During our conversations, some candidates have raised questions or issues on which we would
be grateful for your advice:

Dear Cheryl

Thank you very much for your email to s 22(1) and all the best for the new year. The team has
commenced work on this batch of appointments, however, there are a couple of matters that it
would be useful to clarify.

With respect to your email below his term, the Attorney approved a 3 year appointment for
Bernard McCabe.  s 47C(1), s 47E(c)

s 47C(1), s 47E(c)

As you know, in order to prepare the letter to the Prime Minister, we need to contact all of the
new candidates to seek their CVs and Private Interest Declarations (PIDs) and seek PIDs for the
existing members.  Unless you have concerns, we propose to ask the AAT to assist with PIDs for
the existing members, by asking that they seek PIDs from all members whose terms expire this
year (to avoid giving any indication of the Attorney’s decisions). While we will of course do
everything we can to provide a submission by Monday, given the significant number of
appointments to be progressed, it will be difficult to meet this timeframe. I also note that AGO
had requested that all submissions requiring the Attorney’s consideration before his leave be
provided by cob tomorrow. We would be grateful for your approval for a short deadline
submission to be provided next week.

We will keep you updated as to the progress of this submission if we have difficulties with
contacting candidates or there is a delay in receiving the required documents. If we encounter
difficulties, one option would be for AGO to speak with PMO about seeking an exception to the
15 business day guideline.

An alternative option would be to provide the sub with the letter to the Prime Minister attaching
all of the CVs and PIDs that we have at that point in time and note that the department will
provide the outstanding documents to PM&C once we have received them. However, PM&C
have previously indicated that this approach is suboptimal s 47C(1)

Whichever approach is preferred, we will liaise with our colleagues at PM&C to progress this
proposal as quickly as possible.

Finally, Mr Stephen Parry’s contact details were not included on the word document with the list
of new candidates for appointment. Would it be possible to provide his contact details?

Regards

The Attorney has today approved additional nominees for appointment to the AAT.

The attached table contains these names and is in place of Table 4 at Attachment A of MS18‑

should commence at level 3.

Many thanks Cheryl.  Grateful for your advice as to whether these two will be full-time or part-
time appointments.

By way of update on progress, the team has spoken with all of the s 47C(1  new candidates, other
), s
than:
s 47C(1), s 47E(c), s 47F(1)
Any assistance you could provide in getting in touch with these candidates would be greatly
appreciated.  The candidates we have spoken to have all indicated they will be able to provide
their documents this morning.  In terms of existing members to be re-appointed, the AAT’s
advice indicates that there are 15 PIDs currently outstanding.

Given your advice that the priority will be the new appointments and the Deputy Presidents,
with the exception of the three candidates above we expect to have the requisite documents for
those today.  We will continue to endeavour to progress all of the appointments and
reappointments in one batch, but it may be that some re-appointments and the appointments of
the three candidates above will end up having to be put forward separately.
