In the Hawkesbury Gazette on 22 August 2017 it reported in part, “Among former serving members and their
families, Veterans’ Affairs claims data shows 986 hospitalisations for intentional self-harm from 2000 to 2016
involving 789 people.”
INFORMATION I AM SEEKING: I require information for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 for:
The number of former serving member hospitalisations for intentional self-harm by year, and The total number of
veterans involved in each year

Please note:
Filtered based on at least one diagnosis ICD code listed for the hospital admission that is in the range X60 to X84. These are the relevant codes for
intentional self-harm, but note they do not in themselves indicate suicidal intent. The ICD codes do not include a distinction between ‘Intentional self-harm
with suicidal intent’ or ‘Intentional self-harm without suicidal intent’ .
Admission to hospital included treatment of diagnosis caused by intentional self-harm, however this may not be the reason for hospital admission.
This is for patients of all age groups but only includes people with eligibility at the time of admission for DVA funded treatment (gold or relevant white
card), where that entitlement was used for the hospital stay.
Totals are across both of private and public hospital settings. 2021 data for public hospitals is incomplete, data submissions still to come from various State
Governments.
