Dear Dr Morrissey,
Subject: Allegations against Campion Institute Limited academics (our reference: CMP1405878)
I am writing in relation to the article
The far-right figures teaching students at Sydney college published by
The Sydney Morning Herald on 1 October 2025.
The article alleges that Associate Professor Stephen McInerney and Dr Stephen Chavura, both
academics of Campion Institute Limited (Campion College), ‘[promote] white nationalism’. According to the
article, ‘McInerney, the dean of studies, gave a speech this month saying Australia must one day form
new political parties dedicated to the interests of “our people”, meaning white Australians’. The article also
quotes Dr Chavura as saying ‘the country should prefer an immigrant called David Smith to another called
Mohammad Jihad, where the latter was a law-abiding, taxpaying, English-speaking Muslim’.
The article further shares that Campion College ‘is now investigating the academics who argue that
Australia’s Anglo-European culture is under existential threat’, and that the college president, Dr Paul
Morrisey was ‘unable to comment on whether Chavura and McInerney would remain in their roles during
the investigation’.
I am bringing this matter to your attention so TEQSA may better understand Campion College’s
investigation into this matter, and how the college is ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for its
students and staff. I am writing to request that by 14 November 2025, Campion College provide further
information to TEQSA regarding its investigation.
The information you provide will assist TEQSA in deciding if any action is required to address any
concerns and ensure ongoing compliance with the relevant obligations under the
Higher Education
Standards Framework (Threshold Standards) 2021, specifically:
Section 2.3 which requires a provider to advise students about access to support services and
foster and promote a safe environment.
Standard 6.1.4 which requires the governing body to take steps to develop and maintain an
institutional environment in which the wellbeing of students and staff is fostered.
Request for information
By 14 November 2025, please respond to the following questions, including any relevant supporting
evidence:
1. What specific concerns is Campion College investigating?
2. Will Associate Professor Stephen McInerney and Dr Stephen Chavura continue teaching at
Campion College while the investigation is underway?
3. Could you provide more information on the investigation process, and when it is expected to be
completed?
4. Could you provide the most current version of the college’s policy regarding academic
misconduct, specifically in relation to racism-related misconduct?
5. What support services are available to staff and students affected by matters raised in this article?
6. How has Campion College’s governing body ensured a safe and inclusive environment for its staff
and students?
A request (
REQxxx) has been created in the TEQSA Provider Portal for Campion College to submit its
response by
14 November 2025.
Should you have any questions regarding this request, please contact myself via email to
quoting case number
