Dear Gail

Thanks for your e-mail to the CrimTrac FOI Inbox at [CrimTrac request email]. Please note that your message and any reply we provide you will be published on the internet because you have reached us using the Right to Know website www.righttoknow.org.au

Your request currently does not meet the formal requirements in subsection 15(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act). Your request must state that it is an application for the purposes of the FOI Act and, more importantly, must provide "such information concerning the document as is reasonably necessary to enable [us] to identify it". As well as providing further details, it is useful to let us know where in CrimTrac's records we are likely to find the document.

You should also note that CrimTrac is not a law enforcement agency. CrimTrac is not directly involved in operational police work. Unlike police officers in your state or territory, CrimTrac employees do not collect information or reports relating to crime, criminal activity or persons of interest. CrimTrac's primary role is to facilitate, manage and administer information-sharing solutions to support the work of Australia's police and law enforcement agencies.

In other words, CrimTrac does not collect reports made by members of the public to local police stations (whether relating to crime or motor vehicle accidents). The police agency in your state or territory is more likely to possess these types of records.
