(department) on 10 July 2025, for access under the Freedom of Information
Act 1982 (FOI Act) to the following:

“… any documents — such as draft amendments, reports, briefing notes, or
discussion papers — held by the Department of Education, which contain or
specifically relate to proposed legislative amendments or draft
legislation to the Australian National University Act 1991 (Cth).”

Your request was received by the department on 10 July 2025 and the 30 day
statutory period for processing your request commenced from the day after
that date. The period of 30 days may be extended if we need to consult
third parties or for other reasons permitted under the FOI Act. We will

Clarification of the scope of your request

Your request, in its current terms, is potentially very broad and may
capture a range of documents.  As you may be aware, the Australian
National University Act 1991 (ANU Act) has been amended several times
since the Act commenced.  The department requires further information to
enable it to identify the documents you are seeking.

In order to allow the department to search for relevant documents, please
specify a date range for the documents you are requesting.  You may also
wish to restrict the scope of your request to documents relating to a
particular proposed legislative amendment to the ANU Act. For your
assistance, we are advised that the department is not currently, nor has
it recently, provided advice relating to proposed amendments to the ANU
Act.

We would appreciate receiving your response by COB 23 July 2025 to allow
us to continue processing your request.

If you do not respond within this timeframe or do not wish to provide a
date range for your request, the department will process your request in
its current terms.  Without pre-empting a decision or next steps on your
request, this may mean that the department needs to commence a formal
request consultation process with you under section 24AB of the FOI Act.
