Hail insurance payments and hail remediation expenses in underlying operating result
Dear Australian National University
I request access to documents held by the Australian National University that relate to the treatment of hail insurance payouts and hail remediation expenses in the University's financial reporting, particularly in the calculation of the net underlying operating result.
I note that in addition to the net operating result presented in the University's Annual Reports, a separate figure—referred to as the net underlying operating result—is frequently referenced in communications such as the Change Implementation Consultation. This underlying result excludes certain sources of income, including hail insurance payouts.
Accordingly, I request the following information:
1) Documents (including emails, internal memos, financial statements or reports) that detail the total amount of hail insurance payouts received by ANU since 2020, with amounts specified by year (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 if available).
2) Documents that detail the total hail remediation expenses incurred by ANU since 2020, also identified by year.
3) Documents that identify what portion or percentage of the hail insurance payouts were excluded from the calculation of the net underlying operating result in each year (2020–2023).
4) Documents that identify what portion or percentage of the hail remediation expenses were excluded from the calculation of the net underlying operating result in each year (2020–2023).
If any of the requested documents are publicly available, I would appreciate directions on where to locate them. I am happy to refine the scope of this request if necessary to ensure its workability.
Yours faithfully,
Stephen Mapley

Good afternoon,
I refer to your request for access to documents under the Freedom of
Information Act 1982 (the Act) received by the University on 2 May 2025.
Your request is receiving attention and a decision will be provided to you
as soon as possible..
Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing delays regarding your request
and we will be unable to provide you with a response by the current
decision date of 1 June 2025.
Delays are being experienced regarding the document search process, which
will have a knock-on effect on the timeframe it takes us to process those
documents once received, ultimately causing delays in the finalisation of
your FOI request.
There also likely to be further delays due to the FOI team dealing with a
number of complex FOI requests as well as an increased workload with
minimal staff.
Accordingly, the University is seeking an extension of time of 30 days in
accordance with section 15AA of the FOI Act.
If you agree to the extension, the University would be required to provide
you with a decision notice by no later than COB 1 July 2025.
Your earliest response would be appreciated as we are required to notify
the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) of any
extension agreed.
Kind regards
FOI Team

Dear ANU FOI team
I understand the significant workload you are currently experiencing and agree to the proposed extension.
Yours sincerely,
Rachel Kimmons
Dear Freedom of Information team at ANU,
I would like an update on the status of FOI request #202500069.
In agreeing to the initial 30 day extension you said I could expect a result by COB 1st July 2025.
However that deadline has passed with no response.
Yours sincerely,
Rachel Kimmons
Dear Rachel Kimmons,
Apologies, you are correct the 30 day extension you agreed to expired on 1 July 2025.
Unfortunately, we have been unable to finalise your request by that date and your request is now considered to be a deemed refusal under the provisions of the FOI Act.
Although your request is deemed to be refused, we are continuing to process and hope to provide you with a decision by early next week.
Further, as your request is now a deemed refusal, the Internal Review option is no longer available. Should you wish to seek a Review, you are able to seek a Review directly from the Office of the Information Commissioner (OAIC).
Kind regards
FOI Team

Dear Rachel Kimmons,
As previously advised, I was hoping to provide you with a decision earlier in the week, however, that has not been possible due to one outstanding matter.
At this stage, we anticipate providing you with a decision by the end of this week.
You will be notified of any further delays, should they occur.
Kind regards
