From: FOI

Good morning

I refer to your email of 18 May 2017 below, and note you have asked a question in relation to the sponsorship of an individual to Australia.

Section 15(2)(b) of the FOI Act states that a request for access to documents must provide sufficient information to enable the Department to identify the document you are seeking access to. Your request poses a question and is not a request for access to documents. As such, your request is not valid for the purposes of section 15(2)(b) of the FOI Act.

I further note that you are seeking access to personal information. The Department has a duty to manage personal information in a manner that is consistent with the Privacy Act.  In order for this Department to proceed with any request for access to documents containing personal information relating to a third party, you will be required to verify your identity and provide an authority from the third party before any information relating to them may be released to you on their behalf.

Further details on how to make a valid FOI request can be found on the Department's website here:
http://www.border.gov.au/about/access-ac.... This included a link to the form 424A which will guide you to the information the Department will require should you wish to proceed with your request.

As your request is currently not valid for the purposes of the FOI Act, the Department is unable to proceed with your request at the present time.

If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

With kind regards
