RAN candidates for nuclear propulsion training overseas
Dear Australian Submarine Agency,
As part of the AUKUS agreement, Australia expects to take possession of its first nuclear-propelled sub circa 2033. I understand that the initial crew for this boat will have been trainied overseas.
For purposes of this request, initial nuclear training consists of about one year of classroom and practical work.
I read in the news that the first seven RAN enlisted sailors graduated the US Navy Nuclear Power School in 2024. I also read that a small number of RAN officers graduated. This request refers to one year of training, NPS (6 mo) and NPTU (6 mo).
Request data regarding the number of RAN service personnel sent overseas for the one year of nuclear propulsion training in the period 2023 - 2025. Specifically:
How many officers who began training in the US each of the three years (2023, 2024, 2025)?
How many enlisted began training in the US each of the three years?
How many officers tbegan training in the UK each of the three years?
How many enlisted began training in the UK each of the three years?
What were the success rates for completion in years 2023 and 2024 for those sent to the US?
What were the success rates for completion in years 2023 and 2024 for those sent to the UK?
Yours faithfully,
Jack Dillich
