Court Services Victoria (CSV) is a statutory body corporate established to
provide administrative services and facilities to support Victoria’s
courts and tribunals. The documents in the possession of CSV relate to
those functions. The Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI Act) creates a
general right of access to documents of an agency. Whilst CSV is an agency
and subject to the FOI Act, Victorian courts are not. 

Accessing court documents 

Each Victorian court manages its own information and data relating to its
judicial functions. This means that if you want to access documents
relating to a court matter, you must send your request directly to the
court in which the matter was heard.

We refer to your request under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic)
(FOI Act) received in this office on 4 September 2025, in which you sought
information in the following terms:

“I am writing to request information from the Court’s register under the
Magistrates’ Court Act 1989.

Specifically, I seek details of any prosecutions initiated by Hume City
Council at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court for the charge “Fail to comply
with Fire Prevention Notice” (offence code 91 under the CFA Act / Fire
Rescue Victoria Act) during the period 1 January 2018 to present.

For each matter, I request the following information (if available from
the court register):

-          Case number / file reference

-          Date filed and hearing dates

-          Outcome (withdrawn, dismissed, not guilty, guilty, penalty
imposed)

I am requesting this information for research purposes. If a formal
application (Form 6A – Application to inspect or obtain copy of court
record) is required, please advise and provide the applicable fee.”
