Dear Ms Camilleri

Freedom of Information Request FA 16/02/01971; ADF2016/8110

I refer to your email dated 20 February 2016 in which you have sought
access to documents held by the Department of Immigration and Border
Protection (Department) under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (FOI
Act).

You have requested access to:

'information on the resettlement of the Syrian refugees in NSW and the
plans to help them pursue a life in NSW and Australia.
Any documents that contain plans and explicit details about the
resettlement and plans for them after they come out of any programs that
are running.'

The subject matter of the documents requested by you is more closely
connected with the functions of the Department of Social Services than the
functions of this Department.  As such, your request was transferred to
the Department of Social Services on 23 February 2016 under section 16 of
the FOI Act so that that agency can make a decision on your request for
access to their documents.

Your application was received on 20 February 2016, and the 30 day
statutory period for processing your request will commence from that
date.

The FOI officer at Department of Social Services will be writing to you
directly concerning your request.

With kind regards

Dear Ms Camilleri

I refer to your request under the Commonwealth Freedom of Information Act
1982 (FOI Act), received by the Department of Immigration and Border
Protection on 20 February 2016 and subsequently transferred to the
Department of Social Services (the Department), in which you seek access
to:

"...information on the resettlement of the Syrian refugees in NSW and the
plans to help them pursue a life in NSW and Australia, [including] any
documents that contain plans and explicit details about the resettlement
and plans for them after they come out of any programs that are running".

Preliminary searches for documents have been undertaken by departmental
officers in the Settlement Support Branch who have advised that relevant
material falling within the scope of your request is currently available
on the Department’s website via the following links:

·        “[documents in relation to] plans to help [Syrian refugees]
pursue a life in NSW and Australia…and plans for them after they come out
of any programs that are running”

For your information, data on Syrian (and Iraqi) migrants who have settled
in NSW in the last five years is provided in the spreadsheet (attached)
which may also be of interest to you, but I note that this is data on
historical settlers and does not refer to future Syrian arrivals in the
additional cohort to the humanitarian programme.

Given that the material you have requested is already publicly available
and accessible via the web links provided above, the Department is seeking
your agreement to withdraw your request under the FOI Act.

If we do not receive a written response by close of business Thursday 10
March 2016, your request will be deemed to be withdrawn under the FOI Act
and no further action will be taken by the Department in relation to this
matter.

Please contact me via [15][email address] if you have any queries in
relation to this matter.

Kind regards
