Complaints regarding sharing of personal information with third parties on public WIFI service
Dear Office of the Australian Information Commissioner,
Could you please send through the latest documents that include information about complaints received by your office relating to third parties being provided with personal data captured as part of login processes on free public WIFI services. If possible, please treat this as an administrative/informal request. Otherwise please proceed with my request as a formal information request under the Act.
Yours faithfully,
Sam Duncan
Dear Mr Duncan
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner has responsibility
for privacy functions under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). The Privacy Act
1988 applies to Australian government agencies, private sector
organisations with turnovers of more than $3 million, health service
 providers and not-for profit organisations.
It is not clear what documents you are seeking to access. Can you please
respond to the following questions so I can identify the documents you
 want?
 1.       You have asked for ‘the latest documents that include information
about complaints received by’ the OAIC. Are you seeking to access
individual complaints about entities covered by the Privacy Act 1988 who
have collected personal information via a WIFI logon process, or who have
shared/disclosed information obtained via a WIFI logon process, or some
 other kind of document?
 2.       You have asked for the ‘latest’ documents. What do you mean by
‘latest’? Do you want to specify a date range?

Dear Raewyn Harlock,
Thank you for getting back to me.
Please find clarification of your two queries below:
1. Often when logging onto a public free WIFI service such as a local council hotspot, public transport free WIFI, public library free WIFI etc. personal information such as email, phone number, gender etc. is often requested as part of the logon process. I'm seeking documents about any individual complaints that a member of the public may have made about the information requested from them as part of this logon process and how that information was captured and potentially used.
2. To narrow the scope down a little any relevant documents for 2017 calendar year would be great.
Yours sincerely,
Sam Duncan
