Freedom of Information, Australian National University

Dear Bruce,

I refer to your request for access to documents received by the Australian National University (the University) under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the FOI Act) as follows:

“I seek access to any correspondence between… [e]ither:
a. the ANU Council, or
b. the ANU Council’s Audit and Risk Committee,
and either:
a. the Office of the Chancellor (including the Chancellor), or
b. the Office of the Vice-Chancellor (including the Vice-Chancellor),
that relates to the prior procurement of speech writing services from Murray Hansen and/or Vinder Consulting.”

You specified that the date range for this request is 1 February 2025 to 1 April 2025.

Update on Your Request

• Eight documents were located and have been reviewed in relation to your request.
• Within the in-scope material is information concerning the personal information of an individual.
• Because the request also focusses on a third party, we may also need to consult with the named third party.
• Under such circumstances, the University is required to consult at least with the individual - and potentially with the organisation concerned - under section 27 of the FOI Act before making a decision on the release of those documents.
• We will aim to reach out to any consultee(s) this side of Christmas. However, please keep in mind that that they may not be able to give us an answer in that timeframe – especially with staff in both the public and private sectors taking leave as the Christmas / New Year season approaches.
• While we are waiting to hear back from the consultee(s), we will endeavour to progress all final reviews and actions of your case so that a response can be sent to you shortly after we hear back from the consultation.

Extension for Consultation

Due to the consultation(s) required, the period for processing your request has been extended by 30 days in order to allow our agency time to consult with that organisation (section 15(6) of the FOI Act). The processing period for your request will technically now end on Monday 19 January 2026.

The consultation mechanism under section 27A applies when we believe a third party concerned might reasonably wish to contend that the requested documents are exempt because their release would disclose the personal information of that third party.

We appreciate your patience as we process your request.

Yours sincerely,
