Dear Local Council,

Can you please provide me with the number of food safety inspections carried out in your area annually, for the last three years?

How many warning were issued each year and how many fines each year?

What percentage of all food outlets did the council inspect each year?

Have any outlets been shut down for non-compliance and if so what for and how many?

What were the worst offences/biggest fines for each year?

Yours faithfully,

Nigel Gladstone

Dear Sir,

Thank you for sending your advice regarding access to information relating
to food safety inspections for the years 2014, 2015, 2016.

The following needs to be done by you before Council can provide you with
access to the information mentioned above.

All access requests are administered under the Government Information
(Public Access) Act 2009. Council requires that you fill in a 'GIPA -
informal access to North Sydney Council information - documents & plans'
form found on our website
http://www.northsydney.nsw.gov.au/Counci...

When the form has been completed, please submit it to Council via email
<[North Sydney Council request email]> or in person at the Customer Service
counter.

Once Council receives the form, an authorised Right to Information Officer
from the Document Management Services Department will be allocated to the
request. The Council Officer will contact you to discuss access to the
information.

Dear Denise,

This request is very simple as all the information I am asking for is contained in an annual report all councils provide to the NSW food Authority. The food authority send an email form each year and it is emailed back to them. Lane Cove council had it in their document management system but if you do not you can request it from the food authority and they will email it back to you. It took about ten minutes to collate the information I am asking for according to other councils.

The Food authority will not release the forms as it is third party information so I have to request it from all councils individually. I have already received this information from several councils without the need for a GIPA or any paperwork as it is an informal request.

Yours sincerely,

Nigel Gladstone

Dear Sir,

Food Safety Inspections-Informal Access To Council Information -
Government Information (Public Access) Request NSC ref 2016/850/1

In response to your GIPA Informal Access Request regarding food safety
inspections for the years 2014, 2015 & 2016, please find the information
provided by Council’s City Strategy Division:

(1)    The number of food safety inspections carried out in your area
annually, for the last three years:

2014 = 1274 in total (803 primary's; 374 reinspections and 97 temporary
food stalls)

2015 = 1141 in total (754 primary's; 342 reinspections and 45 temporary
food stalls)

2016 = 1187 in total (717 primary's; 426 reinspections and 44 temporary
food stalls)

(2)    How many warnings were issued each year:

2014 = 86  warning letters (does not include FPAR warnings)

2015 = 130 warning letters (does not include FPAR)

2016 = 811 warning letters plus FPAR warnings

(3)    How many fines issued each year:

2014 = 39

2015 = 21

2016 = 46

(4)    What percentage of all food outlets did the council inspect each
year:

Council inspected 100% of moderate and high risk food shops each year. Low
risk shops are inspected should a complaint be received. Low risk shops
include the likes of news agents and lolly shops.

(5)    Have any outlets have been shut down for non-compliance and if so
what for and how many:

The following prohibition orders were issued:

2014 = 3  (1 for non-compliance with Improvement Notice; 2 for public
health risk)

2015 = 1  (public health risk)

2016 = 10 (4 for non-compliance with an Improvement Notice; 2 to prevent
use of a specified part of the premises - that specified part of premise
subject to the Prohibition Order; and 4 for public health risk)

(6)    What were the worst offences/biggest fines for each year:

North Sydney Council does not classify offences as being "worst". All
offences are taken seriously and all vary in their nature. Some offences
are poor cleaning and hygiene; others are poor pest control management and
others may be  poor temperature control etc.. One cannot be described as
worse than another as they vary so much in nature.

The fines are statutory meaning they are set down in legislation. The
"amount" or monetary value of a fine cannot be altered to be "made
bigger".

Services on telephone number 9936 8100.
