OFFICIAL
Dear Ms Hillhouse

I refer to your email dated 27 June 2023 asking that Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) take action in response to a foreign object that you found in food that you purchased on 27 June 2023.

FSANZ is unable to take action in relation to your complaint. If you are concerned that a particular product or business is not complying with food safety and hygiene standards, we recommend you contact your local food enforcement agency – please see the contact details available below.

FSANZ is responsible for developing the food standards that make up the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code). These standards set requirements for the production and sale of food in Australia or New Zealand. Chapter 3 of the Code, for example, contains food safety standards for food storage, processing, display, packaging, transport and other food handling activities. These standards also set health and hygiene requirements which must be met by food handlers and food business owners.

FSANZ does not enforce the Code or ensure that businesses or food comply with the Code. Instead, food standards are enforced by other government agencies. Complaints about potentially non-compliant foods should be directed to the relevant agency in each state or territory. The contact details for these agencies are available on our website at https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/about/f....

Further information on FSANZ’s role and responsibilities is also available on our website at https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/about/w....

Please contact the FSANZ FOI team on [email address] if you require further information.

Kind regards,
Sarah
