The request was successful.

Dear National Health and Medical Research Council,

In 2010 NICNAS released a report into the research needs of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: http://www.nicnas.gov.au/__data/assets/p...

Could you please provide me with any information that NHMRC holds that relates to this report and its recommendations.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Swain

Dear NHMRC FOI,

Thank you for the update on my request.

1. I agree to your request to extend the due date, but only on the understanding that if you do complete your search before 17 May 2015, you will report back then.

2. I understand from your letter that this request does not directly relate to the NHMRC's work. Could you please let me know which organisations are likely to have considered research recommendations like this.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Swain

Dear Mr Swain

Thank you to agreeing to an extension of time for processing your FOI.

I thought it might be helpful to provide you with some additional information about how NHMRC funds research, to assist your understanding as to why NHMRC may not have specifically considered the recommendations of this report:

NHMRC is Australia’s largest government funder of health and medical research. NHMRC does not generally determine the subject of research grant applications. Rather, applications are investigator-initiated and therefore based on the expertise and research interests of those applying for funding. Research funding is provided on a competitive basis after receiving applications in specific periods each year, for defined categories of grants and awards.

With regards to the organisations who may have considered the report and its recommendations, we suggest that you liaise with the organisations named in the report, namely:
• National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS); and
• The Australian Government Department of Health (including the Office of Chemical Safety, which is a division of the Department of Health)

I hope that this information is of assistance, and we will be in contact as we progress your FOI.

Regards

Kimberley
