University research policies regarding self-experimentation

The request was successful.

To the University.

I would be grateful if you would, if possible, deal with this request under administrative arrangements rather than invoking the cumbersome machinery of the Freedom of Information/Right to Information Act.

I am seeking a copy of any policy documents that your university has (most likely with your Human Research Ethics Committee [HREC], or similar) regarding research involving self-experimentation, by which I mean those projects or experiments in which the only participant is the researcher themselves.

I am particularly interested in (i) whether your university has an explicit policy regarding self-experimentation, and (ii) whether self-experimentation requires HREC review.

Yours faithfully,

Mark R. Diamond

Mr Diamond

I refer to your request for information about University of Technology
Sydney’s (UTS) policy documents relating to research involving
self-experimentation. In particular, whether we have an explicit policy
regarding self-experimentation, and whether such research would require
HREC review.

UTS does not have an explicit policy on self-experimentation and we don’t
have any specific guidance on self-experimentation that is provided to
researchers. All research is covered by our [1]Research Policy which is
publicly available, and research also needs to also be in line with the
[2]National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.

In relation to HREC review, a researcher who would be self-experimenting
would be considered a research participant the same as any other
participant and it would require HREC review if the nature of the research
meets such thresholds.

If you have any further questions or wish to ask about the policy, you can
email [3][email address], or the general; Research Office
address [4][email address]. Note that the university will be shut down
between 26th December 2022 and 3rd of January 2023.

Your sincerely,

Deborah
