Dear Australian National University,

I would like to request access to all relevant information that has led to changes in the CHL, particularly the financial modelling on why the cuts should go ahead, and why the administration has decided that such documents should only be available to affected staff rather than all staff and students which would ensure transparency and accountability of the university.

Thank you for your email.

In order to begin processing your request I ask that you refine the scope of the request. A formal requirement of an FOI access request is that it 'must provide such information as is reasonably necessary to enable a responsible officer of the agency or the minister to identify the document that is requested (s 15(2)(b))'. You will note that a request must be for documents rather than information.

Providing as much detail as possible assists ANU to efficiently identify and locate documents, and can reduce the time and cost involved in processing your request. I have listed below some suggestions which I hope will assist you:

Dates - providing a date range allows ANU to concentrate its search to a particular time frame. For example; March to December 2015.

Names of people involved - providing the names of people who may be involved in creating or receiving the documents allows ANU to further narrow its enquiries.

Administrative areas/Colleges - providing details of the Administrative areas, Colleges or Schools that may be involved in generating, processing or receiving the documents, allows ANU to target its initial enquiries.

Document type - providing the detail of the type of document you are interested in such as: internal memos, reports, emails, academic applications, referee reports, letters etc assists ANU in identifying the right information for the applicant.

Content specifics - providing details of the subject matter or content of what is contained in the documents assists ANU in identifying the appropriate material for the applicant.
