FOI Request – Car Third Party Property Damage Claim Payouts
Dear FOI Officer,
I am making a request under the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
I am seeking access to data submitted to APRA by general insurers under the General Insurance Reporting Framework (GRF), or any equivalent internal dataset held by APRA.
Request:
I request a dataset showing the individual dollar amounts paid out for insurance claims involving cars (i.e. standard passenger vehicles, excluding motorcycles and heavy vehicles) under Third Party Property Damage (TPPD) motor vehicle insurance, for the period from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2023.
I do not seek any personally identifiable information. I am only requesting the raw payout amount per claim (one value per row). If the dataset includes a field identifying vehicle type (e.g. "car", "motor vehicle"), that is welcome.
If available, I would prefer to receive the data in a machine-readable format, such as CSV or Excel.
If the data is held or derived from submissions like GRF 410.0 or GRF 420.0, or from any internal databases based on these forms, I would be happy to receive an extract from that source.
Please contact me if any clarification is required.
Kind regards,
Jonathan Elias

Dear Mr Elias,
Please find attached APRA’s Notice of Decision for FOI request 25-63 dated 5 June 2025.
To provide some context for the decision, please note APRA collects data on motor vehicle insurance (including third party property damage) covering private use motor vehicles including utilities and lorries, motorcycles, private caravans, box and boat trailers, and other vehicles not normally covered by business or commercial policies. However, APRA does not collect data on the amounts of individual claims. Rather, the data collected by APRA on motor vehicle insurance is the total claims paid per insurer each quarter.
Kind regards,
FOI Officer
