Port Arthur Massacre Documents released for public access

Currently waiting for a response from Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office, they should respond promptly and normally no later than (details).

Dear Tasmanian Archive and Heritage ,

I am writing to ask for access to all the documents related to the Port Arthur Massacre that are kept in your office. I feel that the Tasmanian Government Information Strategy Unit (GISU) should make these records available for the public

Your office holds important historical documents, and I believe these should be accessible to the public because the Massacre is a significant event that many people care about. The documents were originally sealed for a certain period, but extensions have kept them from public view for too long. This secrecy can lead to rumors, reduce trust in the government, and make it harder to fully understand what happened.

Even if there were reasons to keep some information private initially, I think it’s time to reconsider. Sharing these records is important for transparency and helping people understand the full story.

I would like a list of all the documents related to the Port Arthur Massacre, such as police reports, evidence, and witness statements. I also ask you to explain why access to these documents is still restricted and how members of the public can request to see them, including any costs or conditions. Please also let me know if there is a timeline for when these documents might be released publicly.

Making these documents available would help the public better understand what happened and strengthen trust in government and archives.

I look forward to your response

Yours faithfully,

Ryan Christoffelsz
