Dear Mr Ashmore,

Freedom of Information Request No FOI/2021/004

I refer to the email to you below of 7 September 2021, seeking access to the following documents under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (the Act):

* Documents between the Department of Veterans' Affairs and the Institute during the period 1 August 2016 to 30 June 2017, regarding the suicide prevention trial held in Townsville; and

* Documents between State Coroners and the Institute during the period 1 August 2016 to 30 June 2017, regarding the suicide prevention trial held in Townsville.

We wish to advise that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the ability of the Institute to comply with the statutory timeframes in the Act because of reduced and alternative staffing arrangements.

Therefore, the Institute seeks your agreement under s.15AA of the Act for an initial 15 day extension from the due date of the decision. With your agreement, that means that you should expect a decision by 19 October 2021.

This period may be extended if the Institute needs to consult third parties or for other reasons, but we will advise you if that is the case. As indicated in the email to you below of 7 September 2021:

* You will be notified of any charges in relation to your request as soon as possible, before we process any requested documents or impose a final charge; and

* When a decision has been made regarding your FOI request, we will send you a letter explaining the decision and your review and appeal rights.

Would you please respond to this email if you do not agree to the extension sought under s.15AA of the Act. Please be aware that should you not agree, the Institute may apply to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner for an extension, which may result in an extension greater than the 15 days sought.

Kind regards,

Anne

Dear FOI,

I am responding to your request today for a 15 day extension to my FOI request.

I am urgently seeking this information as it is likely to form part of my submission to the Royal Commission into Veteran Suicides so I am naturally disappointed I won't be receiving it by next Monday, 4 October 2021.

As an act of goodwill I agree to an extension of 15 days, but no longer.

Many veterans are finding it stressful even writing their submission. I really want to finalise my submission so I can move on after all the fight for this Royal Commission has been going for 7 long years.

Yours sincerely,

Alan ASHMORE
