Enquiries, Office of the Australian Information Commissioner

Dear Frank

Thank you for your enquiry.

The Office of the Information Commissioner (OAIC) has a voluntary scheme for data breach notification and a mandatory date breach notification scheme for My Health Records. The OAIC received 147 data breach notifications for the calendar year of 2016.

However, not all of these incidents would have resulted in identity theft.

For further information on the number of identity thefts in Australia, you might like to contact either IDCare http://www.idcare.org/ or Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) at https://www.acorn.gov.au/ . These two organisations deal specifically with identity theft.

I hope that this information has been useful. If you have any further enquiries, please contact the OAIC enquiries line on 1300 363 992.

Yours sincerely

Trish
