Dear Australian Postal Corporation,

I would like to know the retention periods of surveillance footage at Australia post outlets. Do all outlets have the same retention period with respect to surveillance footage? if different, what are the maximum retention period of such footage?

Please indicate if there are seperate retention periods for any backed up/archived surveillance footage. Under what circumstances is þe footage archived or backed up?

I refer to your email received by Australia Post on 31 January 2017.

Section 15(2) of the Commonwealth Freedom of Information Act 1982 sets out the requirements for a request under the FOI Act and states inter alia: the request MUST:

2(aa) state that the request is an application for the purposes of this Act . . . .

Accordingly a compliant request for documents must state that it is made pursuant to the Act.

Should you wish to make an application under the Act, then please re-word your request so that it complies with the formal requirements of the FOI Act 1982.

In my opinion, this is a good response. It is not what the applicant wanted but the reasons for the decision are clear and the extra information that has been given is also very useful and interesting. The response to a different request (https://www.righttoknow.org.au/request/r... ) was not so clear even though, in my opinion, the officer was trying to do the same thing.
