Pre-roll promos on ABC iView

We're waiting for Malakai to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Australian Broadcasting Corporation,

I write regarding the unskippable pre-roll promotional material across ABC iView on-demand television programs, including on the Apple TV platform's iView app.

I reference a comment by Ruth McGuire in 2017, https://www.righttoknow.org.au/request/d..., which asserted the unskippable nature of preroll promotional material on iView was related to technical limitations. She also wrote "consideration to skip-able pre-rolls [will be given]".

I request documents from 30/01/2017 (the date of that comment) to 10/01/2024 (today) that provide a rationale for this preroll promotional material, or which relate to any consideration given to their removal and/or technical changes.

This should be taken as an informal request. I will only proceed with a formal FOI request through due process if required. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with this request; if it should be made narrower or clarified.

Yours faithfully,
Malakai

Good evening Malakai

The ABC refers to your informal enquiry. Our apologies for the delay in responding, we have been making internal enquiries in the meantime.

If you would like to seek an answer to your query informally in the first instance, we can connect you with our Audiences team who may be able to provide you with an update that is similar in nature to the summary provided at the link below that you referenced from a similar enquiry made in 2016. Alternatively, you may wish to speak to one of their team members by phone.

If you would like particular doument searches to be conducted, and assessed against the FOI Act to see whether any exemptions may apply, this will need to be a formal FOI request made under s 15 of the Commonwealth FOI Act. If you prefer to proceed with the FOI request then we agree that it would be helpful to clarify and narrow the request, and we are happy to propose wording if you like.

Please let us know your preference at your convenience. The FOI team is happy to chat by phone, if that suits you, to better understand your request and talk through options.

Many thanks,
ABC FOI team

Good evening Malakai

We refer to our response of 13 February and note you have not responded to
our email explaining the ABC cannot process this request informally
outside of FOI.

You have not submitted a valid FOI request and have made an informal
request, specifically you stated on 10 January: “this should be taken as
an informal request”.

As we have not heard from you since 10 January, the ABC will close this
file as invalid as it does not comply with s 15 of the Freedom of
Information Act (Cth) 1982.

If you receive this email and would like to proceed with a valid FOI
request later on, we will open a file for you at that time.

Or, if you would like our help to make a valid request you may call the
FOI team during business hours.

Alternatively you can reach our Audiences team at the same number to make
an informal query or complaint to them via this online form: [1]Contact
the ABC

Many thanks,
